Since his childhood, Derek Drake has always been a creative soul.
Attracted to Africa, he moved from London to the mother land in 1955.
Along the way, he met people from the community and the Townships of South Africa. He started working with them to create many different art pieces.
Afrographic was born : timeless in design, elegant, funky, African.
In 2008, Belgian designer and leather craftsman Vincent Urbain came on board and further developed Afrographic. He took it to the next level, and today the studio supplies more than 100 boutiques worldwide.
For the production, talented women from Khayelitsha, one of South Africa’s biggest townships, are trained and employed to hand stitch the little animals that Vincent sends all over the World. He sees it as his opportunity to give back to the community, to give work to the women who are so important in our society.
In 2005, Vincent founded urban africa, a leather design studio known in Cape Town and overseas for its elegant & edgy leather creations.
